The Southern Vets League - Introduction

The Kent division of Southern Counties Veterans league involves a number of clubs from across the county competing in a range of track and field events such as long jump, discus and sprint relays, to name but a few.

The league has six meeting held between April and July. At each meeting there is a mix of track and field events and you compete against other athletes in your own age group: over 35, over 50 and over 60.

The term ‘athlete’ is used loosely, as you do not have to be a specialist at any event, just willing to give it a go in the first instance. However, as an athletics club, Swanley provides training for the majority of the events and uses Dartford Harriers track facilities when training in many of the field events.

Swanley joined the league in 2014 after many years of focusing primarily on running and we haven’t looked back. It has given club members the opportunity to try different events and earn points for the club. There is lots of support from within the club and also between all the clubs at each meeting. This, along with a really friendly atmosphere and some great facilities at the different venues we go to, makes competing fun.

If you are over 35 and want to try something different, then the Vets League is for you. You don’t have to go to every meeting, although we find that once people come to the first meeting, they become hooked!
